Exhibitions

The 20th century saw the rise of the virtue of individualism as the essential characteristic of the artist in society.  Artists were no longer parts of schools or movements, but perceived as unique individuals who broke molds, developed singular visions, and original expressive styles.  They were expected to emerge, like Athena, fully grown from the head of Zeus. In truth, art has rarely arisen in culture except in community, with the influence and collaboration of network of teachers, organizations and friends who shape our philosophy, processes, and context in which our work is received.

Lineage is an exhibition of paintings, drawings and sculptures that illuminates how The Salmagundi Club has encouraged generations of artists, and stewarded the well of creative practices from which we all draw. Development and creativity is strengthened by a network, and we learn and grow through interaction. The formation of an artist is developed  from Master to student, from group to individual, and then the student becomes the Master. The tradition adapts  and responds to the time and continues. The contemporary generation of realist artists found today at Salmagundi, and across the world, trace their training to those who passed through these doors in times before us.

Not every artist found here was a Salmagundian, but we can see how this Club has been constantly connected in the vital web.  The first generation finds well known American Artists like Thomas Moran, William Merritt Chase, Emil Carlsen, following to NC Wyeth, Robert Beverly Hale, Frank Vincent DuMond,  Dean Cornwall, and  Norman Rockwell.  Forward to today’s elder statesman, (some still painting) who have kept this tradition vital during the 20th century, we find Nelson Shanks,  Martha Erlebacher, Richard Schmidt, and Max Ginsburg. The burgeoning younger generation shows current established Salmagundi Artists like Juliette Aristides, Dan Thompson, and John Varriano, who teach young students today.
