This Portrait Painting Workshop will focus on a five day long pose, working with a live model. Every morning the instructor will demo from 9am til 11:00am in order to lead students with what they will work on for the day, and illustrate the painting process from start to finish. The first day will focus on the grisaille stage, which uses a brown paint to establish the drawing. The instructor will illustrate how to get better proportions by calibrating abstract angle relationships, working from larger to smaller, basic anatomy and gesture. The second day the class will use flesh tones to block-in the planes of the structure, begin modeling the forms 'toward the light source', establishing a value range and further developing the anatomy. This will create the portrait as an under-painting. The third day a basic color theory will be introduced and color will be incorporated into the building process. Finally, students will be guided on how to build the 'finish pass' over the course of the last two days. At this stage students will learn about paint handling wet-into-wet and scumbling, modeling the form toward the light source, continued discussions about anatomy, managing color and flesh tones together, best practices for rendering, development of focal points and and achieving an overall finish. The instructor will teach with visual demonstrations every morning as well as with each individual student throughout the day. Students will leave with one ‘long pose’ portrait painting and a more thorough understanding of the painting process from start to finish with the portrait as our subject. This workshop is for beginner to advanced students. Some basic drawing experience is beneficial.

Workshop Description: 2 day portrait painting

April 15 - 16, 2023

This will be a two-day long pose oil painting workshop with a live model. Both days the instructor will demonstrate leading students with what they will work on each session. To start off, students will learn how to get better structure and likeness through the practice of abstract angle relationships as our drawing foundation. Students will then build upon this by modelling the surface of the face with a basic flesh tone value range. This is the basic method upon which more elaborate portraits can be developed. Also discussed will be adding color to our flesh tones, how to start this process and how to think about it based upon classical formulas and also pure abstract color perception.  We will end the class with developing the features further to create a focal point for the portrait.

This five day workshop will make the connection from drawing to painting, with the human figure as our muse. Starting with drawing the first two days, students will learn the basics of abstract angles and its relationship to structure and anatomy and then building on this with values to create volume and form. We will then use this same strategy with oil paint during the final three days, ending in a longer pose incorporating color and finishing methods.

Evening Portrait Classes - Philadelphia

Studio Incamminati

Monday evenings 6 - 9 pm

This course will focus on how to build a portrait over several sittings. During the course there will be two models/poses, with each pose consisting of 4 sessions. In each session a different stage of the portrait-painting process will be encountered by the student; each with its own disciplines and techniques demonstrated by Kerry.

Portraits can be challenging, and so we will employ the alla prima method to first tackle how to get better drawing. We will build on this by blocking in basic values and modelling with flesh tones, giving us the ‘form’. With this as our foundation… we can then discuss and play with adding color, and finally the flourishes of detail.

The instructor will demonstrate or lecture at the beginning of each class.

Portrait painting workshop, 3 days alla-prima - Austin, TX

Alla Prima Portrait Painting

Alla-prima or Wet-on-wet (is Italian, meaning at first attempt), is a painting technique, used
mostly in oil painting, in which layers of wet paint are applied to previously administered layers of wet paint. This technique requires a fast way of working, because the work has to be finished before the first layers have dried. It may also be referred to as direct painting or the French term au premier coup (at first stroke). This three day workshop will apply this painting method to the portrait as our subject, painted from the live model, and each days lesson will build on the previous day. The first day, attention will be paid to proportion and drawing using only brown paint in order to achieve our first painting. The second day's painting will build upon this start, and then also work with flesh-tones in order to build the forms of the surface anatomy. The third day's painting will build upon this by starting the same way, and then also introducing a greater range of color. Repeated practice over the three days makes for increased ability.
The result by the end of the workshop is a greater facility of painting the portrait from life and a better understanding of the building stages from start to finish, combining drawing, modeling surface forms, anatomy, color, and developing a focal point. Each student will leave with three finished alla-prima portraits.

Figure painting workshop 7 days- long pose - Philadelphia

Master Figure Painting: The Long Pose

Instructor: Kerry DunnSunday - SaturdayAugust 18 — August 24, 2019Time: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.Tuition: $899 Save $200 by taking both the Master Long Pose Figure and Master Portrait workshops for only $1,598

The instructor demonstrates from start to finish over the course of the seven days. Every morning the instructor demos from 9 - 11 a.m.  to introduce students to their day's work.

The first day focuses on the grisaille stage, which uses a brown paint to establish the drawing. The instructor  illustrates how to get better proportions by calibrating abstract angle relationships, working from larger to smaller, basic anatomy and gesture.

The second day the class uses flesh tones to block-in the planes of the structure, begin modeling the forms 'toward the light source,' establishing a value range and further developing the anatomy. This creates the figure as an under-painting; color is then incorporated at a later stage.

The third day, a basic color theory is introduced, at which point the class takes a short break from the long pose to explore a separate color study of the figure. Students then apply what they have learned about color to the figure and its environment of the long pose, resulting in a full-color under-painting by the end of the fourth day.

Finally, students are guided on how to build the "finish pass" over the course of the last three days. At this stage, students learn about painting wet-into-wet vs. scumbling, modeling the form toward the light source, basic anatomy, and managing color and flesh tones together, rendering edges, and finishing.

This workshop has been expanded to give students more time to develop their figure painting to a fuller finish. The instructor teaches with visual demonstrations every morning as well as with each individual student throughout the day. Students leave with one fully finished painting, one color study and a more thorough understanding of the figure  painting process from start to finish.

Additional workshop events:

Portrait Painting 5 day, Atlanta, GA with the Atlanta Portrait Society

The purpose of this workshop is to study the building stages of creating a portrait painting from life. By following a basic process, we more closely examine each stage and its correlating visual principles.

Students will start with a grisaille in order to capture the gesture and use Bargue drawing type thinking to study the proportions of the head. Then flesh tones are added to develop a fuller value range and begin building the illusion of light on form. Color studies using a basic abstract color theory and an understanding of the color of the light source will be explored and then woven into this process as we enter the middle stages of the painting.

Finally, the second half of the week will be devoted to a long pose where students will practice building their painting in preparation for the ‘final pass’ or ‘finish pass’ which will also be explored. All stages will be demonstrated by the instructor along with individual attention at each student’s easel. In addition we will study the use of edges, focal points, the concept of larger to smaller relationships, planar thinking, anatomical landmarks and paint handling.

The class starts with shorter head studies progressing toward a 2½ day portrait painting at the end of the week. Students leave with a greater understanding of the cohesive painting process and the ability to integrate the exercises into that process. This moves them closer to painting a more complete portrait.

Kerry Dunn conducts a three-hour painting demonstration Tuesday, Sept. 25, 7 – 10 p.m. at the Heritage Center, 6110 Blue Stone Road NE,Sandy Springs, GA. The demo is free to workshop participants and also to the Portrait Society of Atlanta members and $30 for non-member /general public.
